The "Pretentious" Book Meme

From here . Apparently the BBC reckons most people will have only read 6 of the 100 books here. Instructions: 1) Look at the list and put an ‘x’ after those you have read ENTIRELY 2) Add a ‘+’ to the ones you LOVE. 3) Star (*) those you plan on reading. 4) Tally your total at the bottom. My two cents 1 Pride and Prejudice – Jane Austen X+ 2 The Lord of the Rings – JRR Tolkien 3 Jane Eyre – Charlotte Bronte X+ 4 Harry Potter series – JK Rowling 5 To Kill a Mockingbird – Harper Lee X+ 6 The Bible X (yes, that happens when you go to a Catholic school and attend summer catechism classes) 7 Wuthering Heights – Emily Bronte X+ 8 Nineteen Eighty Four – George Orwell X+ 9 His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman 10 Great Expectations – Charles Dickens * 11 Little Women – Louisa M Alcott X+ 12 Tess of the D'Urbervilles – Thomas Hardy 13 Catch 22 – Joseph Heller * 14 Complete Works of Shakespeare (Not all but quite a few) 15 Rebecca – Daphne Du Maurier 16 The Hobbit – JRR

Movie Review: Ha Sodot (The Secrets)

This is the first Israeli film I've ever seen, and my first movie with lesbian content (though I've seen my fair share of TV lesbians). Also, I'm not Jewish and I know as much as the average Catholic does about Judaism, so if I commit any faux-pas, forgive me. Then again, political correctness has never been my strongest suit. FYI: I watched this raw (the film is in Hebrew and French), so there's that, too. THE STORY The Secrets  centers around a pious girl, Noemi (Ania Bokstein) who, being the daughter of a well-respected rabbi, is learned on the orthodox faith. The film begins with the funeral of Noemi's mother and an awkward conversation with Noemi's fiance, but soon moves to an all-girls' seminary school. Noemi shares a room with three other girls -- the fat one, the funny one and the rebel. The latter is named Michelle and is from France and smokes (because she's from France!) and is rather individualistic. In other words, the complete opposi

All things new (I like me some TV Part 2)

Is this becoming a TV/movie blog? Uhm...right now? They're my only outlet, so pretty much, most of my blog topics. Though FYI: I watch these on the computer mostly. So, there. Seen the pilot. Enjoyed it. Hoping this holds up because I don't usually watch sit-coms. ( IMDB ) Dystopic future! Time travel! Dinosaurs! What more could I ask for? ( IMDB )

I like me some TV

The Good Wife Season 3 This will start airing on Sept. 25, 2011. Last we saw of the show, Alicia and Will checked into the presidential suite in a hotel together, Peter's the new D.A., Cary's still hating on Alicia and seems to be in cahoots with Peter, Kalinda's doing her thing. I've just seen the trailer and ooh, looks like it's going to be an awesome season. The Walking Dead Season 2 Coming in October. About a month away, but I've seen the teasers and it. is. scary. In case you forgot, I love zombies. They're awesome. But this show does more than scare the pants off of you. It actually gives you an actual story about humans and what happens to humanity in all this inhumanity. lolz In short, it's truly a survival game, which is the main reason why I even like zombies. Game of Thrones Season 2 There's no airing date yet but there's all kinds of news about people joining the cast. I'm actually looking forward to this the most. S

On my screen, big and small

Not in any particular order... Kimi ni Todoke (live-action) STARRING: Tabe Mikako, Miura Haruma Actually, I've seen this like one million years ago but only kind of remembered it now. Hm. It's a pretty faithful adaptation. The actors/actresses look like their manga/anime counterparts -- except maybe for Kazehaya but the actor exudes the persona so that's fine. My favorite scene was when Sawako made this really constipated face and she says that she's happy. LOLz I love the actors who played Ryu and Yoshida. The actress who played Yano was a dead-ringer, which was really fun to see.   The Kids Are All Right STARRING: Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, Josh Hutcherson I have to admit, I never got interested in this movie. Back when this was buzzed about for the Bening's Oscar-worthy performance, I was too concentrated on Natalie Portman's The Black Swan  and didn't really bother with the other shows. And I only watched it now because I wanted

Slacking Off

It was Intramurals Week at the university I'm teaching at last week, and we had the long weekend. So I had a lot of free time, and I told myself that I would spend it working on lesson plans, hand-outs and petition that needs to be ready by Wednesday. Instead, what I've been doing: picture from here . I suck.

The Original Plain Jane

Yeah, so I just found myself watching this movie today and was so utterly captivated by it, that I was all "what the hell am I supposed to do?" I had to read the novel again. Which I did. Today. And finished it. Today. (My obsessions are brief and occasional but they are  obsessions). The 2011 adaptation . The intro to the film confused me a little bit. I know the novel to begin with Jane's childhood with the cruel Mrs. Reed, but here we are looking at an adult Jane (actually, she should only be eighteen but played by 19-year-old Mia Wasikowska) running out of a stone house and into the wild moors. She's crying and there's fake rain all over her. It takes me a while to understand that the film has thrown us right in the middle of the story as Jane runs away from Thornfield Hall after a very ignominious discovery about her master. She's running away to heed her conscience, to preserve her principles and self-respect. She ends up, half-frozen and half-starve
